In order to show the most recent progress in the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, and strengthen the international collaborations, Professor Chuanlun Zhang, Assistant Professor Xinxin Li and PhD students Weiyan Wu/Fengfeng Zheng represented members of the Institute for Geo-Omics Research (TIGOR) participated in the Goldschmidt international conference from August 13-18, 2017 in Paris.
Professor Zhang presented an invited talk “Diversity and Niche Specificity of Archaea and Bacteria between Particle Attachment and Free-Living Phases in the Mariana Trench” done by the PhD student, Haodong Liu. He explained the diversity and functionality of free living and particle attached hadal microbes. Zhang also gave a talk “Integration of Multi-Discipinary Research in Deciphering Hadal Processes” on behalf of Professor Jiwei Tian from Ocean University of China. The talk reported the gigantic effort, fruitful accomplishment and bright future of the hadal science in China. Li, Wu and Zheng presented their efforts in the Geo-omics study in the form of posters entitled “Compositional Dynamics of Organic Carbon in Surface Sediments from the Lower Pearl River to the Coastal South China Sea”,“Source and Preservation of Archaeal Intact Polar Lipids in the South China Sea Subsurface Sediments” and ”Diverse Biological Sources of Isoprenoid GDGTs in Terrace Soils of Southwest China and Implication for Organic Proxies“ during the conference.
TIGOR members also actively advertised the department and university to the participants. They welcome excellent scientists to visit, study and work at SUSTech. Meanwhile, they talked to experts from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) , King Abdullah University of Science & Technology(KAUST), University of Bremen, University of South Denmark, and University of South Hampton in order to solid the existed collaborations.
Goldschmidt is one of the topmost international geochemistry conferences. It is hosted once a year by the European Association of Geochemistry (EAG) and the Geochemical Society(GS), The 2018 conference will be held in June at Boston, USA.
