The Symposium on Geophysical Exploration and Resources in the South China Sea was held in Sanya, Hainan Province, on July 9-10, 2017. The symposium was hosted by the Marine Geophysical Professional Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society and Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It mainly discussed the future directions of geophysics and resource researches in the South China Sea, and combinations between Hainan province government and geophysical researchers to work together on geophysical studies in South China Sea, and to promote the development of Marine geophysical in Hainan province.
Professor Qingsong LIU was invited by the conference organization, participated in a modern Marine geological investigation in the eastern Hainan Island, and provided an academic report on “Paleomagnetic geochronology in weak magnetic sample”. Based on the improvement of measurement technology of rock magnetism and paleomagnetism, the research team of professor LIU has been successful in dating the weak magnetic samples (carbonate such as coral and stalagmites). They have achieved great progress of sediment core dating in Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, South China Sea and Yangtze River Delta of China.
After the report, Prof. LIU and other meeting attendees discussed possibilities of further cooperation between Southern University of Science and Technology and other institutions in China.
